Here’s a game we used to play here 10 years ago, when people chatted in blog comments as often as on Twitter. Now it is a question asked more often on Twitter, but that takes a patience for following divergent threads I don’t have.
The goal is to identify the outlier and explain why it doesn’t belong on the list. There may be more than one answer, although I happen to have a specific one in mind.
I’ll be back Monday, shrug when I find nobody has left a comment and provide my answer, along with the reason I asked the question to begin with.
All five of these breweries made beer for the Urban Chestnut Brewing Company’s LagerFest in 2018. But there is something (recently) different about one of them.
a) Bierstadt Lagerhaus Brewery
b) Olde Mecklenburg Brewery
c) Live Oak Brewing
d) Dovetail Brewery
e) Urban Chestnut Brewing
March 1: The answer is Olde Mecklenburg. Here’s the reason why.
I’m not anywhere near well-versed on the current beer scene news, but I do recall that Bierstadt has begun packaging beer, when they previously did not. In Southern New England, where I reside, there was Facebook community discussion about a brewery response about growler fills: “You probably still use a fax machine as well. We are unable to fill growlers at this time.”(paraphrase) The discussion about aluminum can shortage, convenience, packaging line costs for smaller breweries, &c all ensued. Some states growler regs are nonsensical to me, but, I still like them.
It’s obvious! 4 of them have “Brewery” in the name, while UCBC has “Brewing”.
My real answer is Dovetail but all I’ve got is a hunch. I personally hadn’t heard of it before several months ago but I keep running across it via Twitter.
I think that b, c & e have the same BrauKon brewhouse, and that Bierstadt has something bought from a disused German brewery. Not sure about Dovetail, but will guess they have a BrauKon and Bierstadt is the different one.
Live Oak is different in many ways — the only one more than 20 years old, the only one whose best selling beer is not a lager, the only one that moved to a new location, the only one with a disc golf course.
I think it’s Urban Chestnut is the only one to make Hard Seltzer. Although, not sure if that’s recent enough.
Urban Chestnut – the only of these breweries (and maybe the only craft brewery in America) to also have a brewery in Germany.
