How important are “beer snobs” to the 6,000 (or so) breweries in the country that sell fewer than 1,000 barrels of beer a year?

Because this headline: “Craft Beer Snobs Suddenly Love the Humble Lager.” It is a Wall Street Journal story (which says something in itself), so behind a paywall. But the headline, subhead and beginning of the story will give you the gist. The humble lager is back. Not sure about the arrogant one . . .

I miss the humble lager. It was the one that I used to brew at home. Never as good as I could buy in a store (if it was fresh enough) and not as good as many a small brewery has made over the last decade or so locally. It never had a website, never won a competition, never discussed in a book, but it existed for enjoyment and contemplation. I cannot really speak to whether or not the very large producers of Lager (with the huge advertising budgets) are anymore humble or arrogant than ones made by a small brewer with Galaxy hops, Kiwi, lactose, &c. Perhaps another wine world comparison is needed? Anything on wine snobs in the humble WSJ regarding their “latest fad”? Perhaps the WSJ, like so many others over the last couple centuries, need to get rid of their fear of someone’s enthusiasm and willingness to educate themselves on details of an item? Nah, what would waste our time on otherwise? Studying the history of the temporality of “Taste”?
