BEER AND WINE LINKS, MUSING 08.13.18
In concluding his beer newsy notes last Thursday, Alan McLeod wrote, “No need to link to the usual bland beer travel puff, beer pairing puff or puff-packed beer style announcements.” At that moment I paused to realize I heart more tweets than I save links to pass along here because it seems to easier to stay interesting for 280 characters than even a simple paragraph (not that there isn’t puff on Twitter). There was, in fact, some excellent reading last week related to beer and wine that I feel compelled to share. But before getting to them, The Twitter Edition (and be sure to notice those that lead to conversation).
GIVE ME AN I, GIVE ME A P, GIVE . . .
Your beer style name is your least favorite emotion plus IPA

Brut IPA.
Milkshake IPA.
Sour IPA.
Tea IPA
Brett IPA.
Variously fruited IPA.
And of course, New England IPA.What other "new" IPAs are out there, slouching towards Bethlehem to be born? Serious question, brewers: what new changes are you ringing on this old style?

YOU HAD TO BE THERE
Some of last night’s whirlwind beer tasting through Vilnius — raw beers, baked beers, pea beers, beers with wormwood, IPAs, APAs, fruited Goses, Baltic Porters, Czech Pilsners — the Lithuanian beer scene is varied from old-school to new school and is quite fun. pic.twitter.com/WmAOiJLRFK

Also actual Finnish word: kalsarikänni = getting drunk at home in your underwear with no intention of going out (not necessarily alone)

BEER LINKS, BRIEFLY
The Magic Guinness Blend c.1939.
“This comes from a typed document in a plain brown wrapper written in 1939 and updated to take account of wartime brewing restriction.” Just in case you bought into the bull there are no secrets in beer.
The Kulture of Craft Beer.
Meet Dooch.
Anheuser-Busch on its way to becoming king of craft beer too.
Julia Herz, director of the Brewers Association’s craft beer program, says “Anheuser-Busch likely wouldn’t have had such an easy march to the top of IRI sales data if consumers had more awareness of who owned the brands.” Agree? Disagree? It’s pretty clear where Pete Dunlop stands.
Business Decisions with Jim Koch of Boston Beer Co.’s Samuel Adams.
Remarks by President Trump Before Dinner with Business Leaders.
“You know when I have a Goose Island, it doesn’t taste the same as when John [Hall] and Greg [Hall] were there.” See above.
Drinking Your Words: When Naysayers Become IPA Makers.
I missed this on IPA Day. But, then, I also missed IPA Day. IPA? This where we came in, right?
WINE LINKS, BRIEFER
– Wine Condoms Break $1M in Sales.
– Overturning the Monoclonal Status Quo.
– One Wine Glass to Rule Them All.
MORE LINKS
Alan McLeod most Thursdays.
Good Beer Hunting’s Read Look Drink most Fridays.
Boak & Bailey most Saturdays.
You have to love when an interview starts with fictional prose like:
“For most, one of those allocations has to go to Boston Beer Company’s Jim Koch. The unassuming founder of Samuel Adams back in 1984 is the epitome of what the thousands of craft brewers nowadays aim to be.”
Knowing about Sex with Sam in 2003, I am a bit fonder of the narrative in Josh Noel’s book about one driver for the creation of the BA being establishing a counterweight to Boston Beer’s, err, irregular approach to things.
