Friday I asked which of these breweries is not like the other.
a) Bierstadt Lagerhaus Brewery
b) Olde Mecklenburg Brewery
c) Live Oak Brewing
d) Dovetail Brewery
e) Urban Chestnut Brewing
My question was inspired by a tweet from Brendan Palfreyman:
“There’s a critical mass of incredible lager-centric brewers in the US right now – @BierstadtLager, @dovetailbrewery, @NotchBrewing, @Suarezfambeer, @ThreesBrewing, @SchillingBeer, @hillfarmstead
“Who am I missing?”
He got plenty of suggestions (expand his tweet to see them), and from a good cross section of the country. But somehow, Olde Mecklenburg in North Carolina did not come up. It should have.
That’s why I posed the question Friday. Interesting responses, I thought.
Beyond that . . . at the risk of being rude, I’m not sure it is correct to call several of the breweries Brendan lists “lager-centric.” They make good lagers. The same was true of many of the breweries in the thread that followed, not lager-centric but sometimes a pretty good lager can be found in their portfolio.
Which brings us to New Glarus Brewing. It’s best selling beer, Spotted Cow, is not a lager. But as you can see here, Matt Brynildson — a pretty OK brewer himself — recently typed, “Let it be heard – Dan Carey is, in my humble opinion, the best lager brewer in the country.”
So who want to argue with Matt Brynildson?
