And the best brewery in the country is . . .

PASTE magazine, cool enough to have struck a free music download deal with Oskar Blues, made “The 25 Best American Breweries of the Decade (2000-2009)” its list of the day Saturday.

And Sunday they gave us “The 10 Best Fashion Designers of the Decade (2000-2009).”

I won’t spoil it and tell you who top designer might be. But, what the heck, Josh Jackson taps Dogfish Head Craft Brewery as his top brewery. I’ll pass on repeating why I’m not keen on these lists but if you want to look here are all 25.

  1. Posting a list is harmless enough, but it’s a pretty worthless exercise. These things are especially bad when the list authors pretend that the order means something. Paste Magazine has the authority to determine Sierra Nevada is 24 and Dogfish is #1. Does anyone take that seriously? The selection is fine, the numbering an absurdity that undermines the whole exercise.

Incidentally, and this may be blog fodder for someone, does it seem like there’s an emerging national consensus on the “best” American craft breweries? Why this group, and why such a consensus? An interesting (and not necessarily healthy) development.

  2. This is a good group of breweries in my book. I agree that the numbering is silly since I would not put them in order anything like that. Having sampled multiple selections from all, there only a few that I would replace with breweries not listed.

  3. I agree with Bill that they are good breweries and Jeff’s that ordering is silly.

As to the consensus, it probably is worthy a post for somebody who wants to do the work.

This list, the various ones from Men’s Journal, Imbibe, DRAFT, etc. from periodicals. Then books like “The Beer Book” (DK last year), Ben McFarland’s new book, “1001 Beers You Must Taste Before You Die,” “Naked Pint,” and probably a few others.

Plus Rate Beer and Beer Advocate, of course.

    And whatever I forgot.

  4. If your’re looking for another great brewery, look no further than effen brewery! It won the microbrewies showcase in Melbourne for best lager, and is an all natural craft brewed lager with no artificial colours or flavours, brewed with a blend of the finest Australian malts & New Zealand hops.

Go to effengreatbloke.com to find out more

    cheers mates!

  5. So if I delete the effen beer post then the Beantown Brews comment makes not sense.

I’m amazed that somebody would think a link posted here would help sell beer just about anywhere.
