Some things are worth the trouble

Monday, August 31st, 2009

From Josef Schneider, owner and brewer at Brauerei Gasthof Schneider in Essing, Germany, quite close to better known Private Weissbeierbrauerei G. Schneider & Sohn but totally unrelated. Why does he bottle-condition all his hefeweiss rather than offer some of it on draft as well? “It’s like sex and Champagne, worth the bother.”

Travel Oregon has announced a “Cuisinternship” contest, which is really seven contests. Despite the tongue-twisting name any would be nice to win. News flash from 1879

Monday, August 24th, 2009

From “Berlin Under the New Empire,” written by Henry Vizetelly in 1875: “Through Prussia the larger breweries are swallowing up the smaller ones which have not sufficient capital to make the needful modern improvements by means of which they might compete on more equal terms. Within the last thirty years upwards of half the Prussian [...]

Would you drink a purple beer?

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

This is what can happen when you judge in beer competitions, particularly homebrewed beer. The beer pictured here is a Prickly Pear Wit. Until I received a press release from the Brunhaut Brewery about its two awards I hadn’t seen the World [...]

The beer link of the month (or maybe 2009)

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Alan unloads. Hard as it may be to believe, I have nothing to add. OK, one thing, we (bloggers) should minimize the amount of time we spend writing about beer writing and use that to write about beer. Alan, in fact, is doing that.

BrewDog Tokyo*: What does it taste like?

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Would you rather read about the fuss BrewDog’s Tokyo* or drink the beer? Given that the brewery released only 3,000 bottles few of us will have the option. But it would be nice to know what Tokyo* tastes like. Zak Avery, reigning Beer Writer of the Year in Great Britain, has the answer. His collection [...]

Shut up and drink your beer

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Don Russell speaks the truth today in his Joe Sixpack column, doing a little digging about the provenance of your favorite beer given all the chatter that arose out of the “Beer Summit.” The lesson here: Drink up and find something else to complain about. Beer is not for xenophobes. Funny thing is he asks [...]
