{"id":563,"date":"2008-05-15T15:19:38","date_gmt":"2008-05-15T22:19:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/are-beer-drinkers-really-trading-down\/"},"modified":"2008-05-15T15:19:38","modified_gmt":"2008-05-15T22:19:38","slug":"are-beer-drinkers-really-trading-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/are-beer-drinkers-really-trading-down\/","title":{"rendered":"Are beer drinkers really trading down?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tired of hearing about <em><a href=\"http:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/what-does-beer-as-a-new-luxury-mean\/\">trading up<\/a>?<\/em> How about a little <em>trading down?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reportonbusiness.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20080515.wmillerbeer0515\/BNStory\/Business\/?page=rss&#038;id=RTGAM.20080515.wmillerbeer0515\">Association Press<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Cash-strapped drinkers are starting to trade down to economy beers, the chief executive of Miller Brewing Co. said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The Milwaukee-based brewer saw some shift between higher-priced, premium beers and economy beers such as Miller High Life and Milwaukee&#8217;s Best starting in January, Tom Long told reporters on a conference call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think it&#8217;s primarily driven by decline of disposable income and pocket money that American consumers are feeling right now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Long said the volume of beers sold remains stable, but the company expects to sell more lower-priced beers this year if gas prices continue to rise.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Look closely. This is a discussion about drinkers already wed to industrial lagers moving from one price level to another. Also, if you read on in the story you&#8217;ll see that Milwaukee Best sales were down. Doesn&#8217;t that present a contradiction?<\/p>\n<p>Brewers of more expensive beers face plenty of challenges between rising ingredients prices and an economic slowdown, and maybe beer drinkers will opt for less expensive beers, but has anybody seen that yet?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tired of hearing about trading up?
