{"id":471,"date":"2008-02-06T08:10:26","date_gmt":"2008-02-06T15:10:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/were-screwed-the-best-if-over\/"},"modified":"2008-02-06T10:03:53","modified_gmt":"2008-02-06T17:03:53","slug":"were-screwed-the-best-if-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/were-screwed-the-best-if-over\/","title":{"rendered":"We&#8217;re screwed &#8211; The jinx is in"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.appellationbeer.com\/images\/20080206-sprecher.jpg\" alt=\"Sprecher Black Bavarian\" class=\"alignright\"\/>OK, we&#8217;re not at the point that <em>Time<\/em> magazine has put 750ml bottles of beer on its cover and declared <strong>&#8220;Beer Is The New Wine.&#8221;<\/strong> That would definitely be a jinx.<\/p>\n<p>But when the business types start paying attention &#151; as BusinessWeek does with<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/lifestyle\/content\/feb2008\/bw2008025_479685.htm?chan=top+news_top+news+index_lifestyle\"> &#8220;Micro Beers Brew Up Big Business&#8221;<\/a> &#151; I get nervous.<\/p>\n<p>Particularly when there&#8217;s every chance that 2008 isn&#8217;t going to look all that great for &#8220;craft beer.&#8221; In the next few months the totals from 2007 will come in and they are going to look great.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t be fooled. Things aren&#8217;t that rosy. You&#8217;ve probably noticed that the economy could be looking better, and you might have heard a little something about beer ingredient costs skyrocketing with <a href=\"http:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/stone-six-pack-prices-going-up-today\/\">higher prices to follow<\/a>. Not exactly a formula for double-digit increases in volume sales this year.<\/p>\n<p>And if brewers hit that bump in the road what are business magazines and newspapers going to write?<\/p>\n<p>In <em>BusinessWeek<\/em> we get just what you&#8217;d expect &#151; a micro history of microbreweries and a list of beers to drink. Before we get to the latter I&#8217;d suggest you pass on history according to <em>BusinessWeek<\/em> and pick up the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allaboutbeer.com\"><em>All About Beer<\/em><\/a> magazine (March 08 with bottles of beer and hunks of cheese on the front) magazine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lewbryson.com\">Lew Bryson&#8217;s<\/a> &#8220;The Real History of Beer&#8221; is, to use the word of the week around here, more &#8220;authentic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now the list of &#8220;America&#8217;s Best Craft Beers&#8221; (according to Nick Passmore and <em>BusinessWeek<\/em>):<\/p>\n<p>Alaskan Pale<br \/>\nAnchor Liberty Ale<br \/>\nAnderson Valley Boont ESB<br \/>\nBreckenridge 471 IPA<br \/>\nFull Sail Amber<br \/>\nOmmegang Abbey Ale<br \/>\nRingwood Old Thumper<br \/>\nRogue Shakespeare Stout<br \/>\nSprecher Black Bavarian<br \/>\nStoudt&#8217;s Scarlet Lady<\/p>\n<p>Not to pick on <em>BusinessWeek<\/em>, but the Black Bavarian is looking anything but black because they used a picture of Hefe Weiss (that&#8217;s why the photo above features the real Black Bavarian).<\/p>\n<p>Fact is this is fine list and I&#8217;m glad they noticed.<\/p>\n<p>Just a little nervous.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OK, we&#8217;re not at the point that Time magazine has put 750ml bottles of beer on its cover and declared &#8220;Beer Is The New Wine.&#8221; That would definitely be a jinx.
