{"id":397,"date":"2007-11-26T07:30:45","date_gmt":"2007-11-26T14:30:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/monday-morning-musing-is-mainstream-beer-back\/"},"modified":"2007-11-26T07:30:45","modified_gmt":"2007-11-26T14:30:45","slug":"monday-morning-musing-is-mainstream-beer-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/monday-morning-musing-is-mainstream-beer-back\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday morning musing: Is mainstream beer back?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.appellationbeer.com\/images\/20071126-coors.jpg\" alt=\"Coors Banquet\" class=\"alignright\"\/>A few beer related thoughts to help you shake free of any turkey-infused haze remaining after a long weekend:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The <em>Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/em> examines if a surprising <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/index.aspx?id=689419\">surge in sales of Coors Banquet<\/a> means full-calorie, mainstream, premium-priced beers can end their 21st century slide (Budweiser sales, for instance, fell 21% from 2002 to 2006).<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also the chance that Coors&#8217; modest gains aren&#8217;t a barometer of anything. &#8220;I guess it shows you that a brand can get so small that it can finally find its base,&#8221; said Eric Shepherd, editor of Beer Marketer&#8217;s Insights.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; As the story about the effects of higher prices for beer ingredients continues to gain momentum (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/business\/2007\/nov\/20\/fooddrinks.foodanddrink\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/news\/oregonian\/index.ssf?\/base\/news\/119587291379260.xml&#038;coll=7\">here<\/a>) the Cascade hop has turned out to be a poster child for the sudden change.<\/p>\n<p>As recently as July the industry was still working through years of oversupply and you could buy a pound of Cascade for $3. Now we&#8217;re hearing about <a href=\"http:\/\/lewbryson.blogspot.com\/2007\/11\/about-those-hops-prices.html\">prices 1000% higher<\/a>. That&#8217;s the spot market and not what the average brewer will pay in 2008, but it make you realize . . . <\/p>\n<p>Once again, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stonebrew.com\/\">Stone Brewing<\/a> is a step ahead. The brewer of Arrogant Bastard Ale and other hop-infused beers has been Cascade free since opening in 1996. OK, that doesn&#8217;t mean its hops cost any less, but it makes a good story.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/food\/ci_7521960\">Bill Brand begins a story<\/a> about &#8220;extreme beers&#8221; with a discussion of price, in this case asking &#8221; Would you pay $30 for a bottle of beer?&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>John Alderete is betting that some of us will.
