{"id":392,"date":"2007-11-19T18:42:01","date_gmt":"2007-11-20T01:42:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/chicago-awaits-the-returns-of-bells-brewed-beer\/"},"modified":"2007-11-20T10:15:58","modified_gmt":"2007-11-20T17:15:58","slug":"chicago-awaits-the-returns-of-bells-brewed-beer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/chicago-awaits-the-returns-of-bells-brewed-beer\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicago awaits the return of Bell&#8217;s-brewed beer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.appellationbeer.com\/images\/20071119-kalamazooipa.jpg\" alt=\"Kalamazoo IPA by Bell's Brewery\" class=\"alignleft\"\/>A Bell&#8217;s beer by any other name is probably still a Bell&#8217;s beer, right?<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why there&#8217;s excitement in Chicago that Bell&#8217;s Brewery in Kalamazoo, Mich., plans to start selling three brands of <em>Kalamazoo<\/em> beer in Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>Rumors that this would happen have appeared on several Internet discussion boards (I first read it in the <a href=\"http:\/\/beermapping.com\/forum\/index.php?topic=564.0\">Beer Mapping Project<\/a> forums) but a story in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagobusiness.com\/cgi-bin\/news.pl?id=27171\">Crain&#8217;s<\/a> makes it quite official.<\/p>\n<p>The basics:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Bell&#8217;s left Illinois last year after a dispute with National Wine &#038; Spirits Inc., a distributor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Brewery founder Larry Bells says he is finalizing contracts with two distributors to bring beer branded as &#8220;Kalamazoo&#8221; to a few bars and restaurants. Each bottle will have a label reading: &#8220;Brewed especially for the people of the great state of Illinois.&#8221; And just to be clear, the labels state the beer is brewed at Bell&#8217;s Brewery, which used to be known at Kalamazoo Brewing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Bells says officials  NWS have told him they will sue to stop the sale of Kalamazoo beers in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it will be a very interesting court case,&#8221; Bell told Crain&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>My guess is that if Bell succeeds you&#8217;ll be able to walk into a bar, order &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ratebeer.com\/beer\/two-hearted-ale\/1502\/\">Two Hearted Ale<\/a>&#8221; and get a classic American IPA without a bartender even asking &#8220;Did you mean Kalamazoo IPA?&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Bell&#8217;s beer by any other name is probably still a Bell&#8217;s beer, right?
