{"id":376,"date":"2007-11-05T11:40:11","date_gmt":"2007-11-05T18:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/whats-next-counterfeit-beer\/"},"modified":"2007-11-05T11:40:11","modified_gmt":"2007-11-05T18:40:11","slug":"whats-next-counterfeit-beer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/whats-next-counterfeit-beer\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s next, counterfeit beer?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.appellationbeer.com\/images\/20071105-fakebeer.jpg\" alt=\"Love that beer\" class=\"alignleft\"\/>Might one of the side effects of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thatsthespirit.com\/en\/blog\/default.asp?Display=68\">higher beer prices<\/a> turn out to be counterfeit bottles?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to imagine problems similar to those plaguing wine, as outlined at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2173361\">Slate<\/a>, in the a <em>very<\/em> long story in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/reporting\/2007\/09\/03\/070903fa_fact_keefe\">The New Yorker<\/a>, and at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.winespectator.com\/Wine\/Blogs\/Blog_Detail\/0,4211,863,00.html\">Wine Spectator<\/a>. Even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avenuevine.com\/archives\/002822.html\">Sammy Hagar<\/a> is worried about it.<\/p>\n<p>But consider this lengthy conversation about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ratebeer.com\/Forums\/Topic-77576.htm\">fake barrel-aged bottles of AleSmith beers<\/a> last week at Rate Beer. In this case we are talking about beer that changed hands in a trade and within a passionate community that has ways to police itself. <\/p>\n<p>But what about when <a href=\"http:\/\/cgi.ebay.com\/Stone-Brewing-Vertical-Epic-02-03-04-05-06-07-Series_W0QQitemZ160176294884QQihZ006QQcategoryZ563QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem\">bottles of Stone Epic Vertical<\/a> come up on eBay? This current auction is offering one bottle each from the first seven releases with a starting bid of $999.99.<\/p>\n<p>Or when somebody buys a bottle of Firestone 10 (Firestone&#8217;s anniversary beer released last year for $9.99) for $300?<\/p>\n<p>It might not even be vintage beer. How about bottles from the Trappist monastery Saint Sixtus (Westvleteren)?<\/p>\n<p>As Stephen Beaumont observes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thatsthespirit.com\/en\/blog\/default.asp?Display=68\">in the link above<\/a> some of the people paying silly-ass prices for these beers don&#8217;t even know what they are supposed to taste like.<\/p>\n<p>Although attention in wine has focused on really expensive and collectible bottles, a newly minted website called <a href=\"http:\/\/was.fcm-rsh.com\/was\/home\">WineAuthentication.com<\/a> points out the problem includes more reasonably (this is a relative term) priced wines. <\/p>\n<p>Even though by wine standards <em>all beer<\/em> is reasonably priced that doesn&#8217;t make it immune to the problem.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Might one of the side effects of higher beer prices turn out to be counterfeit bottles?
