{"id":16728,"date":"2021-11-29T06:56:29","date_gmt":"2021-11-29T12:56:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/?p=16728"},"modified":"2021-11-29T06:58:52","modified_gmt":"2021-11-29T12:58:52","slug":"beer-links-1990-2021-american-pub-crawls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/beer-links-1990-2021-american-pub-crawls\/","title":{"rendered":"Beer links: 1990 &#038; 2021 American pub crawls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kfi.jpm.mybluehost.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211129-taps.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"276\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16729\" srcset=\"https:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211129-taps.jpg 710w, https:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211129-taps-300x117.jpg 300w, https:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211129-taps-150x58.jpg 150w, https:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20211129-taps-500x194.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After visiting breweries in 18 cities across the country since the beginning of October, Jeff Alworth has written about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beervanablog.com\/beervana\/2021\/11\/24\/how-regions-differ-in-the-US\">what he learned<\/a> and what he has seen change since making a similar trip in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>It made me think I would like to listen to a conversation between <a href=\"https:\/\/brewyork.substack.com\/\">Chris O\u2019Leary<\/a>, who visits breweries at a rate that would have been impossible when Daria and I were writing a travel column for All About Beer magazine (RIP), and Alworth. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the takeaway I totally agree with is that the supply of barrel-aged beers fermented with mixed cultures exceeds demand.<\/p>\n<p>Until Alworth books O\u2019Leary for the Beervana podcast, I\u2019d suggest pairing his post with a two-part series Michael Jackson wrote in 1990, \u201cThe Great American Pub Crawl, <a href=\"http:\/\/beerhunter.com\/documents\/19133-000118.html\">Parts I<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/beerhunter.com\/documents\/19133-000097.html\">II<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the summer of 1990, I sampled about 350 beers, in over 100 bars and breweries, in more than 25 states, through a five-week journey that described a letter &#8220;W&#8221; from Boston to Tampa to Minneapolis to Tucson to Seattle. Had I been able to progress in a series of straight lines, it would have been a 4,500-mile pub crawl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>ETHICAL OFFSETS<\/strong><br \/>\nBeer is alcohol and stealth Prohibitionists are not altogether wrong when they remind us that alcohol may harm individuals and as a result society. One of many thoughts I had after reading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.culturematters.org.uk\/index.php\/culture\/dining\/item\/3838-how-to-drink-beer-ethically\">\u201cHow to drink beer ethically\u201d<\/a> [h\/t <a href=\"https:\/\/boakandbailey.com\/2021\/11\/news-nuggets-and-longreads-27-november-2021-mega-city-one\/\">News Nuggets and Longreads<\/a>] is that by \u201cdoing good\u201d breweries, large or smaller, may appear to offset any societal harm they cause. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not the way it works. There\u2019s more to \u201cdoing good,\u201d just as there\u2019s more to being environmentally responsible than buying carbon offsets. Earned in every case or not, breweries that would call themselves craft have the cachet to act as agents of change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CONTENT<\/strong><br \/>\nIn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodfoodrevolution.com\/lessons-from-online-beer-classes\/\">\u201cLessons From Online Beer Classes,\u201d<\/a> Jordan St. John writes:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeyond a certain point, professionally speaking, beer is content. It\u2019s informational. My fridge is more than half full of obligational beverages that people have sent for review and which might end up on instagram or in an article. I probably won\u2019t finish more than about half of any of them, because the point isn\u2019t drinking them; the point is knowing about them.\u201d  [h\/t <a href=\"http:\/\/abetterbeerblog427.com\/2021\/11\/25\/the-december-is-almost-here-edition-of-the-beery-news-notes\/\">Beer News Notes<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><strong>ANGST<\/strong><br \/>\nJim Vorel seems genuinely bothered to see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pastemagazine.com\/drink\/craft-beer\/st-bernardus-christmas-ale-review-best-christmas-beers-cans-bombers\/\">St. Bernardus Christmas Ale in cans<\/a>. \u201cAnd not even printed cans, either\u2014these were wrapped cans of the sort you might expect to see from Local Hype Brewery\u2019s new, weekly hazy IPA release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOSTALGIA<\/strong><br \/>\nI will trust you to read <a href=\"https:\/\/boakandbailey.com\/2021\/11\/special-grade-mediocre-everyday\/\">&#8220;Special grade mediocre everyday&#8221;<\/a> from the start, but I\u2019m skipping right to the finish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut (the pub) does have to be a bit damp, a bit warm, a bit weary. Our friends need to be there. And we need to be in our twenties again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like anybody, I\u2019d be happy to be in my twenties again.
