Some provoke obvious questions. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Tradition<\/strong><br \/>\nWhat role does <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beervanablog.com\/beervana\/2021\/9\/14\/beers-rosetta-stone-national-tradition\">national tradition<\/a> play in discovering what to many drinkers is <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.porchdrinking.com\/articles\/2021\/09\/15\/what-would-you-give-a-new-craft-beer-drinker\/\">new?<\/a><\/em> When does the <em>new<\/em> become tradition? Can tradition once lost become the new <em>new?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beer. Not beer<\/strong><br \/>\nThe sentence not to overlook in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/2021\/09\/17\/history-behind-rise-hard-seltzer\/\">\u201cThe rise of hard seltzer echoes the 19th-century lager craze\u201d<\/a> is . . . \u201cHard seltzer, however, is not lager.\u201d Meanwhile, is it too early to be documenting hard seltzer tradition?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Party on<\/strong><br \/>\nOh, and about the &#8220;appeal of alcoholic beverages that we are led to believe are better for us.&#8221; Drinking is still drinking. Witness the proliferation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/09\/19\/us\/nashville-party-vehicles.html\">party vehicles in Nashville, Tennessee.<\/a> &#8220;We made the monster, and now we can\u2019t control the monster. It\u2019s the plot of every monster movie.&#8221; One that may be changing the city. &#8220;You can have a fun, entertaining, unique experience here. There\u2019s nothing unique about downing 12 White Claws at 3 in the afternoon in 95-degree heat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Terpenes<\/strong><br \/>\nFirst, passing this along without suggesting or endorsing <em>anything.<\/em> This research concludes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenentrepreneur.com\/article\/385297\">the \u201centourage effect\u201d is real<\/a> and that \u201con their own, terpenes mimic the action of cannabinoids.\u201d The terpenes in this study are humulene, geraniol, linalool, and pinene. All are present in hops, and the best way to load them into beer is via dry hopping.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robot beer?<\/strong><br \/>\nThis sentence might make you shudder: \u201cThe win was an important milestone in that it\u2019s the first time that a homebrewer used an automated beer brewing countertop appliance to help develop an award-winning recipe at the HomeBrew Competition.\u201d The key phrase is <em>help develop,<\/em> because Christain Chandler used <a href=\"https:\/\/thespoon.tech\/beer-made-with-a-beer-brewing-robot-wins-gold-medal\/\">the countertop system<\/a> to make multiple iterations of a basic recipe that was his creation, not the machine\u2019s. <\/p>\n<p><strong>The business pages<\/strong><br \/>\nFor more than 30 years I\u2019ve been reading stories in which brewers wonder when beer will gain the same respect \u2014 never specifying exactly what that means or who the respect is from \u2014 as wine. So it is interesting to see Mike Veseth ask, <a href=\"https:\/\/wineeconomist.com\/2021\/09\/14\/beer-wars\/\">\u201cWhat can wine learn from beer?\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Always for pleasure (or not)<\/strong><br \/>\nLisa Grimm finds Island\u2019s Edge from Heineken \u201coddly thin, creamy head notwithstanding, and barely registers anything beyond roasty water \u2013 it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lisagrimm.com\/2021\/09\/13\/strange-times-in-stout-land\/\">less a stout and more the ghost of one.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hotel Luna Mystica on Taos Mesa (west of Taos, NM) A few stories I filed away to think about while driving here and there.
