{"id":15056,"date":"2018-03-30T08:43:28","date_gmt":"2018-03-30T14:43:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/?p=15056"},"modified":"2018-03-30T08:43:28","modified_gmt":"2018-03-30T14:43:28","slug":"making-lagers-cool-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/making-lagers-cool-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Making lagers cool again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ron Pattinson posted a bit of history Thursday about lagers from Barclay Perkins, plus a <a href=\"http:\/\/barclayperkins.blogspot.nl\/2018\/03\/lets-brew-1932-barclay-perkins-draught.html\">recipe for 1932 Draught Lager.<\/a> And Kristen England added notes about brewing the version from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bentbrewstillery.com\/\">Bent Distillery<\/a> he&#8217;ll pour April 22 in St. Louis at <a href=\"http:\/\/urbanchestnut.com\/save-the-date-for-historic-lagerfest\/\">LagerFest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cool stuff. Also this week, I&#8217;ve been trading email with other brewers about the lagers they made for the event. More cool stuff. But the highlight of the week was discovering that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bolzenbeerband.com\/videos.html\">Bolzen Beer Band<\/a> has been added to the program. Only the addition of <a href=\"https:\/\/bravecombo.com\/\">Brave Combo<\/a> and some sort of battle of the alternative polka bands could make it better. They might bring down the brick walls at Urban Chestnut Brewing Company.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/images\/20180330-kulmbacher.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"712\" alt=\"Recipe for Kulmbacher Export, brewed by August Schell Brewing Co.\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pattinson provided most, but not all, the recipes used to make the beers that will be served. Here&#8217;s the log from the December day that August Schell Brewing in Minnesota brewed an 1879 <a href=\"http:\/\/barclayperkins.blogspot.com\/2014\/10\/kulmbach-area-export-1878-1893.html\">Kulmbacher Export.<\/a> When I asked David Berg at Schell&#8217;s why he picked this particular recipe he replied, &#8220;My love for Oberfranken.&#8221; Although the recipe targets 80 IBU this beer is closer to the high 40s and &#8220;pretty dang bitter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For further reading he suggests digging into <a href=\"http:\/\/barclayperkins.blogspot.com\/2014\/10\/kulmbach-area-export-1878-1893.html\">&#8220;Beer Brewing in Bamberg, 200 Years Ago.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ron Pattinson posted a bit of history Thursday about lagers from Barclay Perkins, plus a recipe for 1932 Draught Lager.
