{"id":12461,"date":"2014-08-01T14:41:34","date_gmt":"2014-08-01T20:41:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/?p=12461"},"modified":"2014-08-01T15:15:50","modified_gmt":"2014-08-01T21:15:50","slug":"oh-those-wild-and-crazy-new-mexican-hops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/oh-those-wild-and-crazy-new-mexican-hops\/","title":{"rendered":"Oh, those wild and crazy &#8216;New Mexican hops&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Elsewhere bloggers are posting for Session #90 today, but I&#8217;m not <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hipsterbrewfus.com\/2014\/07\/the-session-90-beer-fight-club.html\">feeling in a fighting mood.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Instead it seems more timely to show you a few photos from Embudo, New Mexico, because the link I posted yesterday on Twitter to a <em>Smithsonian<\/em> article about <em>neomexicanus<\/em> hops sure <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StanHieronymus\/status\/494564899150757888\">struck a chord with some people.<\/a>  I&#8217;m quoted in the story, but you can pass on that part. And take the headline with a grain of salt (&#8220;Will it change the way we think of American beer?&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Sierra and I <a href=\"http:\/\/appellationbeer.com\/blog\/updating-he-nm-hop-and-bird-crops\/\">visited Todd Bates&#8217; farm<\/a> six years and 49 weeks ago. We called it a field trip (this was before she escaped our clutches for full-time public school). I wasn&#8217;t even committed to write &#8220;Brewing With Wheat&#8221; at the time, and I sure as heck had no idea I&#8217;d end up writing a book about hops. It&#8217;s more than a little strange to look back at these photos and think that I&#8217;d be explaining <em>neomexicanus<\/em> hops to people. It might have been simpler had Bates (pictured below) found the hops in Arizona or Colorado. That he cultivated <em>neomexicanus<\/em> in New Mexico is something of a coincidence, but more on that soon.
