Wikio Beer Blog rankings for May

This month it falls on me to preview the Wikio Beer Blog (U.S.) rankings for May, which are based on April (and perhaps months before) social activity.

I considered an alternative headline, like ‘BROOKSTON BEER BULLETING RETURNS TO TOP” or “APPELLATION BEER CONTINUES TO FALL” or “OAKSHIRE BREWING – WTF?” But those who care about the rankings just want to see them and the rest of you have already moved on. Here they are with the tiniest bit of news to follow.

Ranking brewed by Wikio

No need to revisit the various conversations that sprung up when Wikio first began ranking U.S. beer blogs, so instead some news.
Washington Beer Blog, which dropped from No. 8 to No. 11 this month, and Blog About Beer are among the six finalists for Saveur magazine’s Best Wine or Beer Blog. The other four are wine blogs. It’s something of a popularity contest, with voting to begin May 12.

There are more than a dozen categories, and I find it interesting that the last one listed is “Best Professional Blog.”

What does that say about the rest of us?

  1. Is there a verb for “slowly creeping up undeservedly in the ranks” because that is what I seem to be doing.

  2. jay – I’m pretty sure Barclay Perkins would be No. 1 if Wikio ranked The Netherlands beer blogs.

  3. “Oakshire Brewing WTF” would be appropriate. At some point Wikio will realize that the Portland beer blogging corps constitutes half of all beer blogs and our interlinking screws everything up. That we do have such an impressive corps of bloggers should be reflected in rankings like these, but not to this extent. Oakshire’s blog, which is really just a company website with new release info, would not be in the top 100 were it not a brewery beloved by Portland beer bloggers who link to it when they do reviews of Oakshire beers.

You could also say that the whole thing underscores what a tiny niche beer blogging is in terms of eyeballs. But please don’t.
