Where in the beer world?

Think you know where in the beer world this photo was taken?

Please leave your answer as a comment.

I’m not sure if I expect anybody to come up with the correct answer, but I like this because it is a piece of history. That’s one hint. If you look carefully you’ll find at least one more.

  1. ‘Naturally’, gyle sheet signed by ‘Lisa’ is it? and 1989, beer being racked to a serving tank suggests a brewpub. One’a those Belgian-style brewers, maybe? New Belgium, Glarus? Doesn’t/didn’t one of those have a brewster?

  2. I’m going to say Sierra Nevada. The grist seems about right and the Cascade dry hop would fit. Perhaps right around the time they moved to their current location.

  3. I’m putting my money on Brian. The original Sierra Nevada recipe was one of Ken Grossman’s slides at CBC. I have a picture of the picture somewhere.

  4. I’m guessing that the first & second hoppings are Bullion? Not sure SN ever used Bullion in the past, but they don’t now — according to their web site.

  5. I’ll go with Rogue. Their Newport, OR brew pub opened in 1989, and it being Halloween today, maybe that is an early version of Dead Guy. I’d also picture John Maier’s handwriting looking something like that.

  6. “I’d also picture John Maier’s handwriting looking something like that.”

But why would he sign Lisa on the manifest… maybe trying to cover his identity?! 😉

  7. Not Rogue or John Maier. I have no idea who Lisa might be. Could be the person who worked at the bar . . .

  8. “Could be the person who worked at the bar . . .”

I thought the same, though the majority of the blue handwriting looks like hers, and the Naturally! yeast comment looks the same…

    Brewpub, ’89, hmm…

  9. Oops, IPA — maybe Quail Springs? That would explain the “history,” unless I’m in left field anyway.

  10. Try Hard – I would consider the 1989 brewing records for Mirror Pond historic as well, and because of the Cascade I would say that wasn’t a crazy guess.

For those of you still with this, another hint. This brewpub opened the same year as Deschutes.

  11. How about Vermont Pub & Brewery. I would have guessed something more on the west coast but Greg Noonan was very innovative

  12. James – Would love to see some of Noonan’s logs, and indeed he did open in 1988. But, sorry, from some place farther west.

I really do thank all of you for playing. This is much more fun that talking about OCB.

  13. Goose Island was definitely ’88, and Cara Pils in an IPA would be just like them, but like James said, I was thinking of a different region… something closer to Stan’s new neighborhood…

  14. I’m having a lot of fun digging for this but I’ve got to stop or else I won’t get anything done today. Last guess from me. Wynkoop in Denver opened in 1988, brewpub, uses bullion, cascade, and willamette.

  15. Thank you, James.

These are the late Russell Scherer’s brewing logs, at Wynkoop, from 1989. For those who don’t know, the Brewers Association gives out an annual “Award for Innovation in Brewing” in his name. That’ the historic part.

I went to look at the logs because he got by with a grand total of 5 hop varieties: Bullion, Willamette, Cascade, Tettnang (surely US Tett, so more like Fuggle) and Hallertau (so MittlefrüH). Times have changed.

  16. “…he got by with a grand total of 5 hop varieties…”

What was the historic part? 😉

5 varieties, nice. Reminds me of my homebrew days!

  17. Hey Stan, do you have a full image of the notes? Just wondering how the bottom note finishes:

“Transferred to serving tank #2 due to…”

  18. Sorry, Steve, that’s all there is to the photo. I took notes on some of the other recipes but not that one.

  19. “the black beast of Arrrggghhh”

LOL! I came here for a debate! ;D

Thanks Stan — lost mystery to the ages!
