The Session #7: The Brew Zoo

The SessionRick Lyke has chosen the theme for the seventh round of The Session in September. In short, Welcome to the Brew Zoo.

Have you ever noticed how many animals show up on beer labels? We have lions and tigers and bears, plus various birds, reptiles, fish, assorted domesticated and wild animals, plus a few mythical creatures. For whatever reason brewers have a tradition of branding their beers using everything from pets to predators. The Brew Zoo will celebrate these lagers and ales.

What’s the over/under on Moose Drool Brown?

I think that elves, Santa and Gargoyles all get their own freak show version of the session at number 9.1 or so. Something tells me they’ll get their turn.

  2. Good timing, as I still have images of Pink Elephants dancing in my head…

As for Moose Drool – is it a piece on the animal or the animal’s bodily fluid? If it is the latter, then I’d give it a good line in Vegas.

  3. Let’s not get into the whole “drool in a bottle” thing here, it’s how I was sucked into the RealBeer.com vortex so many years ago — I think we’re just looking for pictures on labels.

Tomme, what about Dragons? Do they fit into the “freak show?” ‘Cause I’d bet they’re close cousins to gargoyles.

Oh, and do horses pulling beer carts count? 😉

  4. I once worked at a Summer Camp and there was a rule that you couldn’t talk to the cook, because he had a serious drooling problem. Which was completely disgusting. I wish his name was Moose (definitely a Colorado mountains Summer Camp cook’s name). George Drool just doesn’t have that same feeling.

  5. I’ve tried Moose Drool; (the beer, not the actual drool). I’d rate is as so-so.
I don’t know what it is about animals and beer. I brew a “Tiger Whiz IPA” and never really thought about the animal connection.

C’mon – who you trying to kid? Did’ja name it after a pro golfer?
