And now we see why the top 50 lists on beeradvocate or ratebeer are skewed towards big beers. They sample very well. Lots of tasters out there in the online beer geek world but drinkers seem to be in the minority here - or are just less vocal about it.

#1 criteria for beer to be good for me is its drinkability - would I want to drink a few of them in a sitting? But this doesn't necessarily have to mean low alcohol session beer - and usually doesn't since I find most proclaimed session beers just not interesting enough to want more than one - what it really means is balance. And balance does not exlude aggressiveness - you can have a 6 - 7% IPA with 75 ibus and still be extrememely drinkable - even something like 3 floyds dreadnaught I find highly drinkable.

You know, the nose knows. A lot of judging and tasting is in the smell. Beyond that, frankly, I agree with MJ that you don't need more than an oumce to decide. Personally, I holde each one up and then I smell in order. Then I smell again and a sip or two, writing all the while. And then, like writing, I go over my initial impressions and build upon them.

It's true, very very different from having a pint or three with your friends.
