Spotted in Brussels: Bottles of Westvleteren

We’re bunking (for one more night in Brussels) less than two blocks from maybe 10,000 beers you probably want to drink.

The best deals are in the grocery stores — not nearly the selection of bottle shops and not what I’m really looking for, but dang solid. Bottles of Chimay, Westmalle, Rochefort and Orval all go for between a euro and €1.50. A 75cl bottle of Chimay Grand Reserve is €2.90.

Anyway, the news. I wasn’t looking for Westvleteren beers since we plan to stop by the cafe next week. But I spotted a crate at de Bier Tempel. Details at Brew Like a Monk.

  1. I was in Belgium around this time last year and I bought one bottle of each of the Westvletren at de Bier Tempel in Brugge. I don’t know if you are planning to go through Brugge or not, but if you do, I highly recommend the Cambrinus as a destination. My dad and I both got to try some Westvletren there and even did a side by side tasting to compare it to the St. Bernardus ABT12, which many say is close. Great place!

Your making me very jealous to say the least as I remember that trip!

  2. Hi,
I live in Belgium and like the Westvleteren beer a lot. As you know it is hard to get them. This time I got lucky and can buy them at Westvleteren. To get them I have to drive 300 km (190 miles). To compensate the cost to Westvleteren I wonder if you are maybe interested to buy one from me. This is 24 bottles of the 12% Let me know
    Kindest regards
    Thierry
