Because US suburbs grew as "bedroom communities," not true villages or towns (though we do have our share of those too, just not as common as suburbs). These places are just roads and houses with small shopping centers placed at interval and large shopping centers at wider intervals.

Blame the baby boom of post WW2 because people needed to be housed quickly and easily. It's a shame and there's probably no reversing it now.

We can also dig deeper into the US tavern and beer culture from the past -- where taverns were dens of sin and trouble and beer was for drunkards and never-do-wells, but that's expanding to different cultural territory that we're trying to overcome.

Stonch, I would recommend the book The Great Good Place by Ray Oldenburg on this subject.

There are some, but certainly the lack of public transportation, and that fact places are too far apart to walk to, is a factor.

Yes, suburbs. What I don't understand is why there aren't community pubs (or bars, to be less UK-centric) in American suburbs?

Well, when Pete was referring to regulars he meant people who were in three times a week and he assigned a name to.

But your point is still valid - different pub cultures. Blame the spread of suburbs.

Customers that visit once a week, considered regulars? That's not regular! If it was, I'd be a regular in at least 5 pubs!
