First: Will this great beer be available in the Sacramento, CA area??? I've seen so many beers come out of Samuel Adams that have not been seen in my area.... If only I lived in the Boston area......

While I'd certainly enjoy a discussion about if a really big pilsner can retain an essential character we associate with pilsner I think that is best continued over beer.

That's why I tried to keep my post to Mittelfrueh and a few technical details.

I enjoyed Stephan's discussion on balance and think he hits the mark. Balance and assertiveness are two different things. Just because a beer is over the top with hop aroma/flavor and even bitterness, does not mean it can not be balanced by malt and alcohol making something very drinkable - Three Floyd's comes to mind immediately as beers that are aggressively hoppy, malty, and alcoholic, but balanced - Dreadnaught in particular. That is a beer that I can drink until my legs give out - every sip brings you back for more, when I finish a bottle, I wish I had more to drink.

Relating this to SA Imperial Pilsner - which I think is totally out of balance, but not due to the sheer hop character, but due to overpowering alcohol and wispyish malt flavor/thickness in relation to the hops and alcohol flavors. The 05 version was better I think since it was much more drinkable - the hot alcohol (which I find present in most SA beers but really stands out in this year's Impy Pils) was subdued by the chewy and characterful malt flavor even as hop aroma and flavor smacked you in the head. I could drink a couple of 24 ozers of that one, after one 12 oz. of this year's, I'm done.

"you can turn the flowery-citrussy-spicy hop flavor volume way up without the discordant impression you get from a cheap pair of speakers."

Nice. I get that same kind of effect from Guatemalan coffee: even when I overload the filter cone to gas up on go-juice when I'm crashing a deadline, Guatemalan still tastes good.

I get orange blossom flowers from Mittelfrueh, even at the insane levels in the Sammy Impy Pils. Such a beautiful noble hop.

Happy belated birthday BTW!

I love the hop diagrams, I would like to see more of those about other hop varieties.

I Can't wait to try this brew!
