I'm afraid I've only had bad Panils, too. I'm happy to hear that the guy who convinced me to pop for the Barriquee at my favorite beer store wasn't insane--he said it was one of the best beers he'd ever had. But still, if the bottle hits double digits in price, it can't be a "mystery beer." Variation is one thing, selling fouled beer another.

No idea about the Panil, but Iris is probably in my top 5 favorite beers! It was my first hoppy AND funky beer...

That is odd. The one I had earned a "brisk" according to my notes as well as the classic "smacky more than puckery" - but isn't there a EU v. US distinction with this beer. My bottle, direct from the Canadian importer, has a different label than what I have seen on US shelves: http://beerblog.genx40.com/archives/2007/june/sourbeerstudies

I've had Panil three times, and have not yet had a sip that was even at the "interesting" level. One was flat, one was "bad sour" (and I am definitely at the Cantillon Iris level), and the third was just...eh. I'm still waiting to see what the big deal is all about with this beer, but I'm going to wait till someone opens a bottle nearby and goes "WoW!" to have any more.
