I will ask the reps from the Halltertau region when they are at the Craft Brewers Conference in April. I'm also inclined to stick with Mitterfrüh but happened to be looking at that book, because I was looking for those charts, when I was typing.

Well, I checked the site of the HVG (Hopfenverwertungsgesellschaft) where that pdf comes from, and they use both spellings. Funny, never seen the spelling Mitterfrüher before.
My "hop-bible" thus far is The Hop-Atlas (english edition) by Barth, Klinke and Schmidt, that uses Mittelfrüh, as does every other source that I know of.
I'm not a native German speaker, but it feels wrong.

Thanks for that link, I've saved it.
However, Mittelfrüher is not correct, Hallertauer Mittelfrüh is, -er translates as from. Compare the other names.

Because TreinJan pointed out that we see Mittelfrüh(er) spelled in a variety of ways, including Mittelfrueh in the United States I was looking through some literature (where it is spelled with "er" at the end) from the German Hop Growers and discovered much of the packet I have is available online.

If you want to take the time to sort through it all, and be warned it is a good-size pdf ,you will find just about any of the specs you could want related to German hop varieties as well as nifty spider charts.

Here's the link.

MITTELFRÜH (as it is spelled where it is grown)

And the name? Germans would call it a Bockbier

Agreed that the name is a "flaw," but I really like the beer (might like it more at 7%).

In all fairness to the two men who brewed the beer, Jean-Marie clearly said from the get-go he wanted to brew something from the past and neither called it innovative.

Perhaps they should have gone with Joe Stange's suggestion and called it Rock Bock.

From here, in a room in a house in a small Czech village, I can't help but laugh at the concept of "Imperial Pilsner". A stronger pale lager? How come nobody thought of that before! They are so innovative. (is there an emoticon for sarcasm?)

Thanks for the first wort hopping link. Most interesting that it was done with Pilsners when every brewer I've talked to uses it in IPA. Were there any other trials done?

Also found a more in depth version of the article: http://www.franklinbrew.org/brewinfo/brauweltfwh.html
