Monday beer links: Cultural perspective, birthday pics, predictions

MONDAY BEER & WINE LINKS, 11.14.2016

The City with a Thorn in its Side — Manchester, England’s Mix of Old and New.
“Manchester is just two hours away from London by train—163 miles. But the gulf between these two cities, from culture to accents, is as vast as the differences between the Florida Keys and the Pacific Northwest. In order to experience these cultural differences, you really need to observe them in person.”

I tagged the story and particular paragraph for use before I read this in Boak & Bailey’s Saturday links: “Matt has received a fair bit of often mean-spirited criticism over the last couple of years but here’s why we like this piece: he heard complaints that UK beer writing is London-centric and got on a train; he has made an effort to explore both trad and trendy; he has included a range of voices and perspectives; and, in a killer last paragraph, has addressed the question of price/value.” Cultural perspective is a good thing, particularly when it is approached as more than an anthropology exercise. The Life of a Professional Beer Taster.
“When somebody asks me, ‘what do you do?’ I tell them I drink beer for a living,” says Ken Weaver. That’s a pretty good hook for a story. But now I want to see another post — involving metrics that may not exist — about people who may be influencing our beer choices more than we realize. Weaver is “beer editor for All About Beer Magazine, for which he also helps to plan and organize a variety of beer festivals and events and oversees reviews throughout the magazine by curating, sourcing and editing more than 100 beer reviews an issue.” That’s influence.
