Loren - It was Dan Carey who used the "janitors" analogy (I remember, because it was a story I wrote). He was pointing out the non-glory part of the job, which is significant but only part.

He said at the time that he likes to hire people who worked in cheese making. Makes sense since his brewery is located in the midst of several small artisinal cheese producers.

And it makes even more sense in a discussion of artisinal products.

Just as there are Picassos, Van Goghs, O'Keefes, Pollocks, and Rockwells in the art world, so are there Burnhams and Wrights who expressed their art in more controlled, precise manner. And so are there brewers who have the passion and heart for their brews -- no matter if they're brewing extreme or sublime - or both.

A question could be; does it fall on the shoulders of the viewer/imbiber to recognize the art in all its forms? I enjoy studying a Monet as closely as I enjoy studying an NC Wyeth - just as I enjoy appreciating an Anchor Small beer as much as I appreciate a Sierra Nevada Big Foot.

It's the art snob (or ignorant) who looks at NC's work next to his son Andrew's and proclaims, "Oh this one is just an illustrator." Or, this one is just a Helles.

Is this going to be published anywhere else, besides on-line? I think it does great justice to the career of a brewer...which has previously been described by the mainstream press as "glorified janitor", which we all clearly disagree with.

Nice stuff Stan. Especially love Steve Parke's quote on "inspiration".

Cheers!

I'd have to go with Artisan and Engineer. While those terms seem to be mutually exclusive I don't think they have to be. Working down here, south of Houston, which is chock full of Engineers, its amazing how many of them are Homebrewers. They all have a tendency to look beyond just the analysis and chemistry of mixing the ingredients but delving into what makes great beer and chasing their hobby with an equal mix of curiousity and passion.
