If Yuppies still exist what do they drink?

As I walked out one evening, down Columbus Avenue,
The sushi bars were shuttered, the dark cantinas, too.
I stood there in the darkness, as an empty cab rolled by
When all at once I heard the sound of Yuppies in the sky.

I’ve seen them in commercials, sailing boats and playing ball,
Pouring beer for one another, crying, “Why not have it all?”.
Now I saw the ghostly progress, down Columbus Avenue,
I heard the cry for mercy, and it chilled me through and through.

– Tom Paxton

So I was listening to “Yuppies in the Sky” this morning (as sung by Mr. Paxton) and the question at the top occurred to me.

Perhaps a silly thought, but Yuppies were in their “prime” about the time we started talking about microbreweries. Plus Yuppies certainly were (or should I be typing are?) about badges. And, like it or not, beer that isn’t yellow in the glass still serves as a badge.

I’m pretty sure I saw Yuppies drinking non-yellow beer about the time the 1980s morphed into the ’90s, but I don’t seem to have any photos. Wonder what was in their glasses.

  1. Whatever they are drinking is much cooler than yours, and tastes much better. If you are drinking the same beer as him/her, then it must be a coincidence, and you just don’t “get” the beer like he/she does.

  2. You mean hipster douchbag. Yes they are synonymous. The Twin Cities probably league the hipster league in complete and utter twats. Restaurants as shooting up all over catering to them. I enjoy a PBR from time to time when I want something light and fizzy. However, when a ‘tall boy’ starts costing $5 these people are off their heads. Case in point, went for breakfast with the fam the other morning to, what I didn’t know then, was a hipster restaurant. Should have know by all the single speed bikes, people smoking American Spirit lights and the Aviator glasses. Anyway, I got the biscuits and gravy, the wife got chilaquiles and kids split some pancakes. My biscuits and gravy were apparently day old scallion scones with some horrid red liquid and a hunk of sausage thrown in. The wifes ‘traditional’ chilaquiles where breakfast nachos that tasted about 3 days old with Sams Club black beans, no eggs, no chicken, nothing. Walked out of breakfast after have two cups of steam brown liquid that was supposed to be coffee but tasted more like chicory ran through an old sock with a bill of $35. I asked the cook, a Mexican dude, what was up with his chilaquiles. He said, oh, they are not chilaquiles. These people…they thikn they are chilaquiles. If you come again, ask for Miguel, I’ll make you chilaquiles. Apparently the owner tells them what things are suppsed to taste like…biscuits and gravy without both…awesome.

Making shitty food is not an art form. You are not Iron Chef. Hipster douchbags…

  3. British yuppies used to drink Corona/Sol because that’s what they though American yuppies drank.

I suspect today the people who WERE yuppies in the UK now drink Sam Adams, and the people who are the same age/demographic today as yuppies were back when yuppies ruled the world drink Leffe Blonde, though I may be entirely mistaken.

  4. Yuppies are alive and kicking. They call Marin County home, north of the Golden Gate. They like “microbrews” a lot and still use that term, but don’t try to challenge them with anything too wild. In general, they like non-assertive wheat beers or a familiar name. Not quite sure what they’re drinking they’re reassured by the fact that they spent more money on their beer therefore making it a better choice. The think beer goes with pizza, BBQ and Mexican food and everything else deserves a good bottle of wine. Many fear hops, so offering them a double IPA can usually scare them away but this is a risky proposition. Occasionally they will like the hoppy brew and insist on you telling them everything about it so they can parrot it to their friends, acquiring the title of expert.

  5. Zima? j/k

Are you referring to Yuppies of the past (80’s guys), or current young urban professionals?

If you mean the later, I would say that they are a prime demographic for craft beer. They have disposable income, care a whole lot about getting high quality things, and are willing to shell out the cash for them – be it for show or whatever.

Think about it – Whole Foods is the Yuppie food store – Whole Foods sells craft. Perhaps they care about taste, perhaps they are only concerned with the sign-exchange value of craft beer. It doesn’t matter; they are buying craft.

@Bazin! I don’t think we should confuse Yuppies for Hipsters. Yuppies are consummate over-achievers whereas Hipsters turn underachieving into an art form.

  6. Ok now, if we’re to come up with terms for what’s happening out there in the world, I have one to add. It relates to tourism here in Northern NM.

    DINKS!
    “Dual Income No KidS”….. Twosomes.

    Awesome folks.
Preseason and post season and off season travelers carrying great vibes with them wherever they go. All kind of twosomes. Loving life, experiencing much, sharing good vibes with all they meet, drinking local life and local brews, tipping well,,enjoying life.
    DINKS.

DINKS aren’t yuppies or fakes as a rule and most are real folks enjoying the diversity of life in style. Classy and kind folks for the most part.

If you ever get the chance to be in tourism or live in a tourist town for a while,,you’ll get to know what I mean.

DINKS. A market. No fooling real folks.

Before the families go traveling,,and when the kids are back in school,,,the DINKS are out. Good thing too,,folks need the good vibes and cash early,,,and the good vibes count for alot at the end of tourism season.
