  1. Yes, but only if you consider beer and its consumption a game or sport. This video seems to be filled with Ratebeerians and Beeradvocates — basically young people who think that analysing the flavour components is how one drinks beer and the more flavours one can discern and/or describe, the more points one earns and so, wins the game.

It seems to me, a direct line could be drawn from this to the obsession with beer style.

  2. My first temptation is to hate BrewDog for attempting to make something so crassly gimmicky as a 41% beer… That being said I think it should be well within their rights to make something that pisses people off and I must admit that I would love to try this “thing” (I hesitate to call it beer).

Ultimately, I think I want beer to challenge me yes… but if it had to be one or the other, I agree with Peter Hooper:

    “I want a beer that’s my friend.”

  3. I have to say I enjoyed the challenge the first time I tasted a real Lambic. I suppose challenge is fine, so long as it is a challenge you enjoy. I think there is plenty of room for both beers that take you some place unexpected, and beers that make you feel at home.

  4. My mantra is to be open to trying new things and trying different things. I’m with Dave. IPAs challenged me for the first few/several months that I got into beer though I stuck with them and now I drink that style more than any other. I wouldn’t pay $100+ for a bottle of beer though I wouldn’t turn down a sample of this for less if given the opportunity.

  5. The answer is no, I don’t need a beer to challenge me. If you say,”Would you LIKE a beer to challenge you?” I say yes. BUT, it does not have to challenge you with 40%abv. I can be challegned by a well balanced bitter or a 4% hefe. And, Like others have mentioned, my first experience with an oude gueze was dreadful, challenging if you will. Now I would like no other beer, but lambics.
As with SA Utopias, Millenium, and DF 120 I’m glad to have tasted but would never purchase and enjoy in large proportions. I suspect I have the same feeling for BD Penguin and Bismarck.
I did however, really enjoy the goose Island Root beer featured prominently in the background. It says a lot for the investment in POS material for retail accounts!
