Beer Geek speak for beginners
Ken Wells, author of Travels with Barley, was one of the superstar editors hired when Condé Nast decided to launch a business magazine called Portfolio.
They didn’t hire him to write about beer, but he has penned two columns in the first two issues, which is good on two counts. First, he’s a wonderful writer. Second, upscale readers who already know how to spend a lot of money on wine are getting a beer education.
The good news is that those of us who determined to save money for beer (or even wine) can read his column free online. This one is headlined “How to Speak Beer Geek.”

Sam Adams and Sierra Nevada are ales? I suppose that’s correct to some extent.

I sent them a suggestion on the Sam Adams gaffe; I see they’ve edited it. I give them a pass on Sierra Nevada, though; ask 100 people in a moderately hip bar what Sierra Nevada is, and 85 of them will say “a pale ale.” It’s kind of like the people who call New Belgium the Fat Tire Brewing Company.
