#5 – Where in the beer world?

Where in the beer world is this?

This week’s “Where in the beer world?” includes a person . . . for those of you with facial recognition software.

A hint? We bought “scratch and dent” cheese at a store in a nearby town. These are cheeses presumably from small-batch cheesemakers of the region that didn’t end up quite right in the package, and thus cost a little less. This is one of America’s great cheese regions, but the S&D swiss did not do well in a family tasting. It seemed a like a good idea at the time, but later I thought, “Would I buy scratch and dent beer?”

I know I promised we’d be talking about prizes for sharp-eyed contributors (readers are four-for-four), so here’s the first: a $50 gift certificate at BeerBooks.com. Lots of great books there to choose from, but Carl Miller also has other cool stuff. Including a bunch of new photos.

  1. I was recently reading about their new brewery complex, which is beautiful (and distinctive)! I’ve heard tons of good things about their brews, but sadly have yet to sample any of them. I really like their commitment to being local providers of quality beer (another brewers of this mindset being Pisgah), despite this goal making it harder for people on the other side of the country to procure!

  2. I think the beers have taken a downward turn of what they used to be. They were much better in the old brew house. Im not sure if they switched the recipes some or just b/c they changed locations, fermenters, etc. The beers are definitely different. In not talking about the Raspberry or Cherry goodnes b/c frankly there is so much fruit its hard to taste the beer anyway!

  3. First, scratch and dent beer is simply called low fills. We’can’t sell them so you wouldn’t have to buy them-they’re all yours Stan!

And if there is a runner up prize (I know there is not, but got excited about the prize listed there) the answer to “Who in the beer world?” is Dan Carey.
Yeah I know, it’s real easy when someone answers New Glarus, but I really did recognize him before the building. really.

  4. Damn. If only I hadn’t been bar-hopping thru Chicago on Saturday, I’d have pegged that one right off the bat! Guess I’ll just have to cry in my Zwickel Helles and Goose Island Anniversary ESB.

  5. Looks to me like Chris had an answer 4 minutes after I posted!

But there is no extra credit for being first. Everybody who comments enters the same lottery ;>)

  6. Stan — I’ve been watching the new New Glarus project with great interest because my friends and I go to the Quivey’s Grove Beer Fest annually. Tie-in being: we camp at New Glarus Woods, the state park just to the south of NG proper… and about one and a half city blocks from the new brewery!!

Can’t wait for this year’s trip.

  7. @Stan – Google Reader, and boy that must update quick, I always thought it took around a half-hour to refresh). 🙂
