#20 – Where in the beer world?

Where in the beer world?

Do you think you know where in the beer world this photo was taken? Then please leave a comment.

When I started this feature I didn’t mean it to turn into a contest. I simply planned to post a photos I find interesting, sometimes to make a point. I didn’t necessarily expect readers to know where they were taken. But from the get-go you surprised me.

As a result I might have lost my way, trying to post images I figured somebody would know but ones that weren’t “too easy.”

This week we return to Plan A. Maybe you will know in an instant where this was taken. Maybe you will be a bit surprised when I tell you, and I sure hope you’ll find it interesting.

  1. I was going to answer as Adeptus did — Kriskindalmarkt somewhere, but I didn’t know Munich had one (then again, many people don’t know Chicago has two!), so I’m going to guess the original in Nuremberg.

  2. Munich probably has a few. Every town and even village has one here in Germany. In Münster, where I live (alot smaller than Munich!), there are five in the city centre (although it could be counted as one distributed Weihnachtsmarkt) and even the little suburb where I live has one on the weekends. Lots of food, Glühwein and crap beer, unfortunately 🙂 Still, a nice social atmosphere.

  3. Crap beer? Even the Chicago Markt has some good offerings! 🙂

I missed that you said it was at the Wies’n — I guess that could be St. Paul’s in the background, couldn’t it?

  4. You can barely make out that the banner says “Tollwood” – Google points to the Winter Tollwood Festival at Theresienwiese (pretty much Adeptus’ guess).

  5. Steve, yes, crap beer as far as I’m concerned. At my local Weihnachtsmarkt on Sunday it was basically Gluehwein or Bitburger Pils, and at the main one in the city centre it’s probably limited to Veltins, Bitburger or similar. Still, it’s drinkable, just bloody boring (it might be a north German thing) 🙂 I’ll find out over the next week or so. Anyway, that’s what my own blog is about; exploring the German beer world trying to find taste sensations 😀

    Nathan, good evidence there!

  6. “…just bloody boring”

I’d have to agree there — our Chicago Markt usually has a (semi) local brewery supplying their Winter Lager — Sprecher from Milwaukee, along with HB Munich brews and a local winery’s Gluehwein.

Yes — great detective work Nathan, now I’m off to check out the Adeptus Blog.

Stan — you gonna clue us in?

  7. Hmmm…it doesn’t look like Koln. Wrong roof. Its not Frauenkirke in Munich. Maybe Regensburg? Damn..where have I seen that before.

  8. Yep, the photo was taken Sunday at the Theresienwiese. It was cold and rainy/snowy but the grounds were packed.

It is more “winter festival/bazaar” than kindlmarkt, of which there are plenty in Munich. The one at Marienplatz was totally packed all weekend, but my favorite was a market a few blocks away, a krippen market, specializing in natvity scenes.

Just thought you guys would want to see the Oktoberfest grounds full of tents and people in December.

A quick aside: Berlin has 50 Christmas markets.

  9. Yay! I finally got one! 😀

My colleagues are planning a trip into the Münster Weihnachtsmarkt this evening for what is apparentlay a tradition for the hardcore staff. Something that involces sugar loaves, rum, fire and lots of alcohol. I’m intrigued, but not sure if I could last this legendary (as it was described to me) night.

You gotta love they way they do things here sometimes 🙂
