#19 – Where in the beer world?

Where in the beer world?

Do you think you know where in the beer world this photo was taken?

I’m not asking for an exact location. Heck, at the time we snapped this I wasn’t totally sure of the name of the place.

But take a shot at the country and the city, think about what you know about pub culture, and leave a comment.

No hint this week. I thought that my hint last week that the “V” had double meaning would lead somebody to think of Vienna. Obviously I was wrong.

  1. This is in the Czech Republic, and the beer mat is Kout na Šumav?, probably one of their dark lagers.

Assuming you weren’t actually in the town of Kout na Šumav?, or nearby Domazlice… I’m going to guess this was at the pub U Slovanské Lípy in Prague.

If you did have it at U Slovanské Lípy, good for you in getting way off the tourist track and going to a “real” Czech pub. U Radnice, also in the same Zizkov-area of Prague, is worth your time as well.

  2. Without Pivni Filosof’s blog I wouldn’t have guessed this, but I remembered reading about the pub a few days back– I used to walk by there all the time when I was heading from Zizkov to Karlin.

The numbers are things ordered (noted by price) and the tallies are the quantity. For instance, the 28, 25, and 26 marks are probably all for different kinds of beer. They had 3 beers of the 25kc beer.

God I miss the Czech Republic.

  3. I can’t be exact as I can’t remember the name or the street, but it’s a local pub for local people in Zizkov in Prague, part of Evan’s “scare the visitors” tour…

Actually, I found it very friendly and the beer was superb.

  4. And there are four marks at 36, which works out to about $1.80 for a 33cl serving of the Kout na Šumav 18. Really good.

  5. “So, what’s with the numbers with the tallies?

The evidence leading to the cause of Stan’s foggy head the next morning — especially if he wasn’t sitting with 10 friends at that table! 😉
